As long ago as the seventh century, Indian Buddhist philosophers developed the idea that matter consisted of particles that themselves were composed of light and energy, a concept that foreshadowed the qantum theory. The Iraqi scholar Alhazen, writing in the eleventh century, stated that light was composed of particles of which the only quality was energy.
