MOVIE NEWS

BURIED

When Alfred Hitchcock made Rope in 1940, it was revolutionary: a story told in a single location in real time with one seemingly uninterrupted shot. Movies have changed a lot since then, but a good suspense thriller is still able to captivate audiences.

Like the progression of technology, the location of suspense movies has just gotten smaller. Enter Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds, a movie that purportedly takes place predominantly inside of a coffin covered with 6 feet of dirt. Just look at the Buried teaser poster .

buried-teaser-poster_572x848

Paul Conroy (Reynolds) is not ready to die. But when he wakes up 6 feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery, and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time - fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued before his worst nightmare comes true.

The new teaser trailer for Buried doesn't feature any actual footage from the film, just some crazy motion graphics and audio clips from the film. But those motion graphics, just like the comparisons being drawn to the film, are very evocative of Hitchcock films, particularly the ones with title sequences designed by the legendary Saul Bass. Buried opens in Australia on October 7th 2010.

SAW

The Saw 3D producers announced at Comic-Con, along with the new Saw 3D trailer and Saw 3D poster, that the seventh film in the franchise will also be the final film of the franchise.

"It's time to stop," producer Oren Koules told USA Today, "We have told the story we wanted to tell, and this is going to be a great farewell." October 22nd will mark the last release date for the Saw franchise. After seven movies, the series has finally run its course.

The latest Saw film will reportedly feature 11 booby traps- double the average of the previous instalments, and was apparently re-edited and submitted to the MPAA six times before it secured an R rating, avoiding the stigma of an NC-17.

"I'm surprised we got it," said fellow producer Mark Burg. "It's more violent than any of them. But it's in 3-D, it answers all the questions, it comes full circle. We have the goods on this one."

USA Today also released a new photograph from the film, depicting one of Jigsaw's bloody traps. The image is from a scene that can be seen in the new trailer.

MOVIE TRIVIA … 10 THINGS ABOUT GHOSTBUSTERS

MOVIE TRIVIA

10 THINGS

ABOUT GHOSTBUSTERS

GHOSTBUSTERS

The 1984 film Ghostbusters starred Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, and Dan Akroyd as paranormal exterminators in New York City (later joined by Ernie Hudson). The script was written by Ramis and Akroyd. The movie was #1 for five weeks straight that summer, and became the most successful comedy of the 1980s. But you already knew all that, didn’t you? Here are ten things you might not know about Ghostbusters.

1.The story as Dan Akroyd originally envisioned it involved time travel and many more ghostbusters. He wrote the principle roles for John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, and John Candy. Belushi died before the movie was made, and Candy and Murphy weren’t interested. Harold Ramis changed most of the original plot to make the production affordable.

2. The film had no name through most of its development. One name that was considered was Ghoststoppers. After the producers settled on Ghostbusters, plans went ahead. Some time later, it was brought to their attention that a live action children’s show named The Ghost Busters had aired during the 1975-76 TV season. Columbia quickly pursued negotiations with Filmation, the owners of the series, to secure rights to the title they were already using. After the movie became a hit, Filmation went back and produced an animated series called Filmation’s Ghostbbusters, using the same characters from the earlier live-action series. A separate animated series from Columbia Pictures called The Real Ghostbusters based on the movie began in 1986.

ghostbusters-movie-poster-1020498665

3. The voice of the gatekeeper Zuul, the minion of Gozer, was that of Ivan Reitman, the film’s director, but he didn’t take a credit for it. Just another trick at a producer’s disposal for saving money - one more voiceover artist they didn’t have to pay!

4. The Proton Pack is the weapon of choice for the Ghostbusters. It is sort of a particle-beam weapon. We have some of those in real-life now, such as the Large Hadron Collider and other particle-acceleration laboratories, but you can’t carry something like that on your back. Columbia Pictures had the Proton Packs made by the prop department out of fibreglass with various gizmos added like pneumatic fittings, resistors, and anything else lying around that might look appropriate.

5. Adult film star Ron Jeremy appeared in a the crowd as the containment unit explodes. The scene is about an hour into the movie, and Jeremy is to the left, sporting his iconic moustache.

6. Harold Ramis, who played Dr. Egon Spengler, is better known as a director. Before writing and acting in Ghostbusters, he directed Caddyshack and National Lampoon’s Vacation. After Ghostbusters, he directed Bill Murray again in Groundhog Day.

7. The spirit/diety Gozer takes the form of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man because Dr. Raymond Stantz (Akroyd) thought of him as someone who would never hurt him. Stay Puft is a fictional company. The Marshmallow Man was only one of many oversized monsters in the original script - the rest were cut due to budget concerns.

8. The voracious green ghost that passes through walls and leaves slime behind is known as Slimer, although he was never referred to by name in the first Ghostbusters movie. Instead, the cast and crew called him “Onion Head”! Oh yes, the voice of the-ghost-to-be-later-known-as Slimer was also director Ivan Reitman.

9. “Who you gonna call?” The theme song “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker, Jr. went to #1 on the Billboard singles chart and stayed there for three weeks. It was nominated for an Academy Award in the best original song category, and won a Grammy. But you won’t find the music video on the home video version of the movie Ghostbusters, due to a plagiarism suit brought by Huey Lewis in 1984. Lewis charged that the tune to “Ghostbusters” was essentially the same as “I Want a New Drug” by Huey Lewis and the News, which came out six months earlier. The suit was settled out of court in 1985, with one of the stipulations being that neither party would ever discuss the suit in public. Believe it or not, Huey Lewis was asked to come up with a theme song for Ghostbusters, but turned down the project, after which the producers approached Ray Parker, Jr.

10. Ghostbusters III has been in discussion for years. Dan Akroyd had a script ready long ago. Producer Ivan Reitman says the movie will begin filming this fall for a 2012 release. The principle characters will be played by younger actors, although the original cast may appear as well. Bill Murray is not interested in participating

Angelina Jolie thinks it would be swell to play the Queen of the Nile.

At Monday's Salt premiere in Hollywood, she told reporters "I would be honored" to play Cleopatra in an upcoming new biopic. "But," Jolie, 35, added, "we haven't gotten the script yet."

Last month, book publisher Little, Brown confirmed that Jolie was in talks to portray the famous Egyptian queen in a film adapation of upcoming historical biography Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra: A Life. "Angelina Jolie radiates grace and power, exactly the qualities that [authpr] Stacy Schiff finds in her biography of the most intriguing ruler who ever lived," Little, Brown publisher Michael Pietsch told Us.

Coincidentally, recent rumors also suggested that Jolie could play Elizabeth Taylor (who took on the Cleopatra role in a 1963 epic) in another future biopic.

"I have never heard that before," Jolie said. "I don't think that anybody could be Elizabeth Taylor better than Elizabeth Taylor."

As for Jolie's current role as a CIA agent on the run in Salt, "I had a great time being her," she gushed Monday. "She is so many different people."

Six moviegoers who won't catch the superstar's first flick of 2010: her children. "I can't show my kids movies where people are trying to kill me," Jolie explained.

Her love Brad Pitt -- who walked the red carpet with her for the premiere -- saw the action flick, though. "He liked it," she said.

At a press conference in New York for his upcoming movie 'The Extra Man,' Kevin Kline suggested he may be back on the boards within a year. BroadWay World's Adrienne Onofri attended the junket on Monday, and on behalf of Kline's theatre fans asked if he'd be working on stage again anytime soon. "There's something I might do this season on Broadway," Kline commented, though he didn't provide further details.

This spring, Kline participated in readings in New York of new plays by David Auburn (THE COLUMNIST) and Theresa Rebeck (POOR BEHAVIOR). When asked specifically if Kline would ever do another musical, the two-time Tony winner responded: "The problem with Broadway musicals is they're so expensive. So they need a year's commitment. And that better be a great musical because that's eight shows a week for a year.... It's unlikely you'll see me in a musical on Broadway in the near future."

Kevin Kline was last on Broadway in Cyrano de Bergerac in the 2007-2008 season. He boasts among his extensive Broadway credits The Pirates of Penzance, Henry IV, and On the Twentieth Century among nearly a dozen others. An artistic associate of The Public Theatre, Kline has appeared in the Public's productions of Shakespeare's Henry V, Richard III, and two turns as Hamlet- once in 1986 and again in 1990 where he also served as director. He has won an Academy Award, two Tony Awards and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009.

In 2011, Sydney will host the World Premiere of a new musical, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO starring Anthony Warlow. One of the most breathtaking love stories ever told, this exciting new production will be directed by Broadway’s Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, Tommy), with music composed by Lucy Simon (The Secret Garden), lyrics by Michael Korie and Amy Powers and book by Michael Weller. Produced by John Frost, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO will play an exclusive eight week engagement at the Lyric Theatre, Star City from February 11, 2011.

headshot_warlow

Based on the famous novel by Boris Pasternak, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO hit the big screen in 1965 as an epic, drama romance by David Lean and created a star of Omar Sharif in the title role. The film remained popular for decades, and as of 2010 was the eighth highest grossing film of all time. Now this grand romance comes to the stage as a powerful and moving musical.

“I’m honoured to bring this timeless story to the stage, and especially thrilled that the World Premiere will be held in Sydney, with the assistance of Events NSW and Tourism NSW. It is wonderful to be working again with composer Lucy Simon – our production of her musical The Secret Garden is still much remembered – and for the first time with legendary Broadway director Des McAnuff. And it’s also thrilling to work again with Anthony Warlow, one of the preeminent musical theatre performers in the world,” John Frost said.

In the early 90’s composer Lucy Simon was in Australia attending rehearsals for The Secret Garden. As she watched Anthony Warlow engagingly portray the tortured Archie, she said to John Frost, “There is my Zhivago.”

“Anthony commands a stage, a rare leading man – he gets behind the character and with that unique voice enriches the story being told. I knew in my heart that here was the man to tell this love story,” Lucy Simon said.

The time has come. DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is a new musical, large in scale, with a sweeping story. With a lavish new score, costumes and sets and a promise to tell a powerful story, Sydney is going to be the first in the world to see the new DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.
